The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Frank — no ordinary sixteen-year-old — lives with his father outside a remote Scottish village. Their life is, to say the least, unconventional. Frank’s mother abandoned them years ago: his elder brother Eric is confined to a psychiatric hospital; & his father measures out his eccentricities on an imperial scale. Frank has turned to strange acts of violence to vent his frustrations. In the bizarre daily rituals there is some solace. But when news comes of Eric’s escape from the hospital Frank has to prepare the ground for his brother’s inevitable return — an event that explodes the mysteries of the past & changes Frank utterly.

Among the Fallen: Genesis by Scott Beadle, Christina Carroll and Ross Shortall

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Horror, Dystopia

Alexandra Beaumont, the daughter of a billionaire mayor of the city of Blackwater, had a pretty easy life until she and her younger sister were brutally murdered. After awakening in her grave three months later, Alex will discover that her death will be anything but easy.

While she lay dead, the Fallen, a violent and malicious race of trans-dimensional demons, invaded Blackwater, spreading a plague of carnage and death. As part of the demonic ritual, which led to their being summoned, the Earth is allowed a guardian, who can compete in a deadly game for a chance to save the Earth from the Fallen’s destruction. Alex discovers she has been chosen and must defeat five Fallen Judges hidden throughout Blackwater, and she must do so before sunrise.

As Alex fights her way through the derelict and plague-ravaged city, and the millions of undead that swarm the streets, she will discover that she may not be who she used to be, and she may have to become something else entirely if she is to win the game and defeat the Fallen.

Cry to Heaven by Anne Rice

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Historical Fiction, Horror, Fantasy

Anne Rice brings to life the exquisite and otherworldly society of the eighteenth-century castrati, the delicate and alluring male sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices brought them the adulation of the royal courts and grand opera houses of Europe, men who lived as idols, concealing their pain as they were adored as angels, yet shunned as half-men.

As we are drawn into their dark and luminous story, as the crowds of Venetians, Neopolitans, and Romans, noblemen and peasants, musicians, prelates, princes, saints, and intriguers swirl around them, Anne Rice brings us into the sweep of eighteenth-century Italian life, into the decadence beneath the shimmering surface of Venice, the wild frivolity of Naples, and the magnetic terror of its shadow, Vesuvius.

The Ignored by Bentley Little

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Many horror stories are about loners or misfits, but The Ignored is about a man who is so average, who fits into society so well, he disappears from view. In a harrowing progression reminiscent of an episode from Twilight Zone, Bob Jones drifts into a state where his co-workers can’t see him, his friends don’t recognize him, his parents die and he’s not even invited to the funeral. Then he joins up with others of “the Ignored,” a tiny minority in their own pocket of reality who validate each other in their mediocrity.

Tomorrow Land/Razor Girl by Mari Mancusi

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Horror, Dystopia

Imagine finding your first love, only to be ripped apart by the apocalypse. Peyton Anderson will never forget the day she was forced to make a choice—between her family—and Chris Parker, the boy she’d given her heart. And now, four years later, as she steps from the fallout shelter and into a dead and broken world, he’s the only thing on her mind.

All Chris “Chase” Parker wanted was to take Peyton away and keep her safe from harm. But he waited for hours in the rain on judgment day and she never showed—breaking his heart without ever telling him why.

Now the two of them have been thrown together once again, reluctant chaperones of a group of orphan children in a post-apocalyptic world where the dead still walk…and feed. As they begin their pilgrimage to the last human outpost on Earth, can they find a way to let go of old hurts and find the love they lost—all the while attempting to save what’s left of the human race?

Rotters by Daniel Kraus

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Horror

Grave-robbing. What kind of monster would do such a thing? It’s true that Leonardo da Vinci did it, Shakespeare wrote about it, and the resurrection men of nineteenth-century Scotland practically made it an art. But none of this matters to Joey Crouch, a sixteen-year-old straight-A student living in Chicago with his single mom. For the most part, Joey’s life is about playing the trumpet and avoiding the daily humiliations of high school.

Everything changes when Joey’s mother dies in a tragic accident and he is sent to rural Iowa to live with the father he has never known, a strange, solitary man with unimaginable secrets. At first, Joey’s father wants nothing to do with him, but once father and son come to terms with each other, Joey’s life takes a turn both macabre and exhilarating.

Escape From Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith

[GOODREADS]

Genre: Horror/Dystopia

Furnace Penitentiary: the world’s most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth’s surface. Convicted of a murder he didn’t commit, sentenced to life without parole, “new fish” Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison.

Together with a bunch of inmates—some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers—Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace’s deeper, darker purpose, Alex’s actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that’s hidden from the eyes of the world.
